The general chairs for CHI 2021 have been advised by SIGCHI that their student travel grant program and Gary Marsden Student Development Fund are being revised. When we have further details we will update this page. However we understand that the expected deadline for applications will be in August 2020. As of May 11th, 2020 we have no further details.
The following sections are left as general information to introduce these two programs, as constituted in the past.
Gary Marsden Student Development Fund
In recognition of Gary Marsden’s contributions and inspiration in HCI4D, ACM SIGCHI established Gary Marsden Student Development Fund in July 2015. The purpose is to support growth of HCI in developing worlds by sponsoring SIGCHI student members who are postgraduate students from and currently based in developing countries to attend HCI relevant events. For those who are currently not student members of SIGCHI, you can apply online to become a member before submitting the application. In the last three years, over 36 students from around the world were awarded by the fund.

Possible Deadlines for CHI 2021:
- November 15th, 2020
- February 15th, 2021
SIGCHI Student Travel Grant
In previous years the SIGCHI Student Travel Grant (SSTG) program was made available to students who lack other support opportunities to attend CHI and other SIGCHI sponsored or co-sponsored conferences. This travel grant is intended to support students whose intention is to present at SIGCHI conferences such as CHI, not just attend. The goal is to pre-approve students for grants before a conference's earliest submission deadline so that if a student gets a submission accepted, that student can count on having a grant awarded for travel to the conference.
For more information about the SSTG program, see here.
However: The Q2 deadline (May 2020) for this program was cancelled due to the significant financial cost of cancelling multiple SIGCHI conferences. As SIGCHI is facing a significant budget shortfall we do not yet know if the Q3 deadline will proceed.
